Adult ADHD Assessment

The introduction of the Australian Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guideline for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in 2022 has enhanced the approach to identifying, diagnosing, treating, and supporting individuals with ADHD. While ADHD is a lifelong condition, timely diagnosis, and continuous treatment are crucial for effectively managing symptoms and enhancing the overall quality of life.

The purpose of ADHD testing is to assess an individual’s symptoms and behaviors, determining if they meet the diagnostic criteria for ADHD. This process involves employing various assessment tools and methods.

ADHD testing also plays a role in excluding conditions that mimic ADHD symptoms, such as anxiety or depression, and identifying co-existing conditions that could complicate diagnosis or treatment.

It’s important to note that in Australia, only psychiatrists or pediatricians can prescribe medication for ADHD. They handle the initial prescription and, once stabilized on the medication, the ongoing management may be handed over to a General Practitioner.
